LEGO® 101: The History of Our Beloved Bricks

We all grew up with LEGO®d on our floors and feet - but what’s the story behind them? The history of LEGO® dates back to the early 20th century when Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter, founded a small company in 1932. Who knew?

The word "Lego" comes from the Danish words "leg godt," meaning "play well." The company started by producing wooden toys. In 1947, LEGO® began manufacturing plastic interlocking bricks, which laid the foundation for the iconic LEGO® design we know today.

Eventually, the modern LEGO® brick design we are familiar with today was introduced in 1958. The new design featured the now-familiar interlocking studs and tubes, allowing for greater stability and versatility in building. This single innovation became the cornerstone of LEGO®'s success.

LEGO® sets gained international popularity in the 1960s and 1970s, evolving from simple building blocks to themed sets with specific instructions for constructing models, such as the famous 1978 LEGO® Castle set.

LEGO®'s commitment to quality, creativity, and educational value contributed to its global appeal.

In the 1980s and 1990s, LEGO® expanded its product lines, incorporating themes from popular franchises like space exploration, pirates, and medieval castles. Additionally, LEGO introduced minifigures - now we call them mini-FIGS -  small, posable figures that added a human character to the imaginative  experience.

Facing financial challenges in the early 2000s, LEGO® underwent a significant transformation. The company refocused on its core values of creativity and imagination, leading to the release of successful lines like LEGO® Mindstorms, catering to robotics enthusiasts. Now, X-ROBOTX offers classes that feature LEGO® EV3, We DO, SPIKE, and SPIKE PRIME robot kits! Each designed and implemented for kids at various stages of development.

The 2010s marked a period of rebirth for LEGO®, with collaborations with various franchises such as Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Marvel. The company embraced digital platforms, offering video games and movies that expanded the LEGO® universe further.

Today, LEGO® stands as one of the most beloved and successful toy brands globally, with an enduring appeal for both children and adults. The colorful interlocking bricks continue to inspire creativity, problem-solving, and imaginative play across generations.
